| Message: | Just finished with my first Placoderm Base meeting here in Iowa. It was great getting a chance to spend time with people with a shared history.
This spring, I had an opportunity to go to Russia for about 10 day. One of the highlights of the trip was getting to know a couple retired Submarine Sailors from there and just sitting around drinking vodka and telling sea stories. What a thrill.
I am not sure if any of the old Abraham Lincoln people from around 1976 ever check these postings, but if you do, it would be interesting to hear from you.
I went on to spend 20 years in the Navy and retired in 1994. I currently work for the State of Iowa where I work in Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management. |

| Message: | I have never been a guy who joined things but joining USSIV was one of the best things I have ever done.
My qual boat was the Nathan Hale(SSBN 623)(G) but because of "The needs of the Navy" should have been Ethan Allan (SSBN 608)(G) I beleive I was the first "Gold crew" to qualify on 623 but can't be sure of that. I did eventually qualify on Ethen Allan and Dace (SSN 607)and spent some time on Cavalla (AGSS 244)
I went through the guest book and saw one name that I remember. Gene(Bon-Bon) Bonas was on Nathan Hale (B). We went through new construction but lost touch after commisioning. If you know Gene ask him if he recycled all those beer cans.
After 22 years I retired in 81 and went sailing for 21 years. I enjoyed the duty on the boats but being the Capt. and sleeping with the Admiral is much nicer.
I am now in Treasure Island Fl and a member of Tang Base.
Best to all, Tom D |

Had reported aboard 2 days after the 599 was launched in Electric Boat in Groton and helped put her in commission. Proud to be a plankowner on the 599. Part of our initial training was a cruise to the "Tongue of the Ocean" in the Carribean and to Cape Canaveral for missile firing. We had both crews down there and the off crew was billeted at Patrick AF Base. The 24 hour mess hall was great especially after liberty.
Both crewS had an opportunity to test fire the A1 missle. We had a mis-fire and the bird landed back on us and we had a 6 foot hole in the superstructure. Came in and had a patch welded over the hole and went back out the next day to successfully launch more birds.
When in Scotland we were tied up next to the Proteus in Holy Loch. Spent alot of time in Dunoon, Guerick and Glaskow.
Great boat, fantastic crew and a total life shaping experience being a submariner.
Currently belong to the JERSEY SHORE BASE of the US SUBMARINE VETERANS

I would like to hear from anyone who served aboard the boat, especially those who were aboard during those years. I've always been proud to have been a submariner and enjoy talking with those who have served. I also like hearing from those who wish they were part of this elite group. I believe that all of us submariners and ex-submariners know that ONCE A SUBMARINER, ALWAYS A SUBMARINER. |

In the hopes that its OK to mention US Navy surface ship duty on your site I did meet Chris for a short period of time before he transferred off the USS White River (LSMR-536). He was the senior radioman in Operations,a great guy and its not surprising to read how well he did in his subsequent naval career.
Sorry to read that he died 7/6/03 due to losing his fight with cancer but his 26 year naval career was well done, making chief and he earned a bronze star for his duty on our surface ship, USS White River (LSMR-536).
Hope its OK to mention White River rocket ship duty in his sub site blurb. |

| Message: | This nots is on behalf of my mother.
She writes, I am writing about trying to find anything about a Gerald Pomeroy who my family befriended during the Second World War, during his time in Australia.
I think he was a submariner but I have just thought that in those wartime years, we were trained not to talk of War matters and I think it was only indirectly that we somehow got to think that he was a submariner That his name was Pomeroy I feel quite certain as I had a letter from his mother at one time.
I was in the VAD Nursing Corps and was living in barracks but Gerald visited my Uncle and Aunt almost nightly when he was not on duty.
I have just realised that Fremantle would have been a long way for him to come almost nightly and wonder if he may not have been on one of the Sunderland flying boats that I remember were on the Swam River in Perth for a long time during the war.
It is all a long time ago and I am a very old lady now but somehow I have a desire to finalise matters and to know what really was the story about the boy I took home after a church service in Perth so long ago!
I am sorry to be a bother to you , but just put it down to my great age!!
I would like to finish with the lovely seaman:s farewell "Fair winds and a following sea " I think it is
Very kind regards. Rosalie Mills
