(SS 133)

S-28-1 (552K) S-28-2 (266K)

 

The official memorial to USS S-28 (SS 133) is located in the
riverside park adjacent to the Battleship USS North Carolina (BB 55)
in Wilmington, NC. It was dedciated by the North Carolina Submarine Veterans
in May 2007.

The names of the crewmembers who went down with S-28 when she sank off
Hawaii on 04 July 1944 are listed on the memorial.

Additionally, all of the 52 submarines lost during WWII are listed
by the year they were lost.

Burnsville

This memorial was built on top of Moonshine Mountain, just outside
the mountain town of Burnsville, NC. It was built by TMC(SS) Harrell
Flowers who rode USS Gato (SS 212) during WWII. It was officially
dedicated by the North Carolina Submarine Veterans in June 2003.

Chief Flowers had gone on eternal patrol several years before the formal
dedication service took place. The new property owners are committed to
maintaining this memorial and welcome submarine veterans to visit it.
